INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY WON THE SECOND PRIZE OF HCMC INNOVATION AWARD

Recently, the work of Research and development of systems applying artificial intelligence (AI) and big data (Big Data) to support doctors in diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease based on MRI images of the brain in Vietnam has been honored as the Second prize of Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Award in 2021 in the 6th field of Science and Technology. The project by Dr. Ha Thi Thanh Huong, Dr. Ngo Thanh Hoan, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Duc, and Dr. Ngo Thi Lua – Faculty of Biomedical Engineering – implemented.

Dr. Ha Thi Thanh Huong – Head of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine

Department, Faculty of Biomedical Engineering – represented the research team to receive the award from the Organizing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Award 2021.

This is a work done by lecturers of the Department of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, in 2021. Dr. Ha Thi Thanh Huong, representative of the group shared: “To extract brain features, we use the highly reliable open source software FreeSurfer developed by a research team from Harvard University. After extracting the brain features, we will use machine learning and deep learning algorithms to train and learn the appropriate pattern types to predict the disease. In addition, the decision tree algorithm is also applied to classify the data as well as determine which important features of the brain carry the most signs for disease diagnosis. Finally, we will build a web app system that will allow doctors to upload MRI images of Vietnamese people and conduct diagnostics.”

In this project, the research team has developed an application of artificial intelligence (AI) software capable of automatically analyzing the patient’s brain MRI images and making judgments about the possibility of Alzheimer. Specifically, the artificial intelligence technology used is machine learning and deep learning. In addition, the team uses Big data technology and Web-based applications to support doctors in remote diagnosis and patient data storage.

In 2019, the 1st Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Award also honored 2 works of Assoc.Prof.Dr. Pham Van Hung (Faculty of Biotechnology) is in the basic field of “Research on technological processes for the production of highly digestible resistant starches and low-glycemic food products for obese and diabetic patients from Vietnamese foods” and Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Thi Hiep (Dean of the Department of Biomedical Engineering) with the project “Smart glue in wound healing”.
